Shah Rukh Khan - the actor, the businessman, the entrepreneur!
SRK's media firm, Red Chillies Entertainment, recently entered into an agreement with Indiagames to roll out a social game - Ra.one | Genesis - to promote the upcoming superhero movie. Why I call SRK an entrepreneur here becomes obvious when you realize that this is a bold step taken in an industry that pretty much lives by the same rules of success, and has always been afraid of experimentation - largely owing to the fact that most of the experiments in past haven't turned out so well for the producers. But the success or failure of this game, and this association will shape up the way such relationships will work out in future.
Khan has always been leading examples with new initiatives at his end - he marked the entry of bollywood into the much hyped about Indian Premier League championship, envisioning of a time when cricket too, like soccer, will turn into a club based model globally. Well, things have not paid off so well as far as the on-ground success of his Knight Riders is concerned, but the business decision is paying off. He has laid the ground work, he is building up on the system, and he is getting ready to just reap the benefits.
And now he is talking about turning the whole movie release process digital. Agreed, what is being talked about right now - 100% digital print releases, social game integrations, digital media collaborations etc. - are small baby steps as far as the digital world goes. But, it is a promising start. And with SRK keeping an eye out on fanning out in the digital space, and generating some serious cash from over there, I don't think it would be real long before he advances from these baby steps to a full-fledged charged-up sprint.
